Biography
Patrick Mitchell is a senior lecturer/associate professor of medicine and respiratory consultant physician at Trinity College Dublin and Tallaght University Hospital. Graduating from UCD in 2007 with a medical degree he specialised in internal medicine and respiratory medicine. He undertook a two-year clinical and research fellowship at McMaster University under which entailed translational research in airway inflammation and servicing both general respiratory and airway inflammation clinics. He also completed a two-year Medical Doctorate thesis on the role of IL-33 in allergic asthma. Following his fellowship he was appointed clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Calgary, Canada where he was director of the airways disease unit. He returned to Ireland to the above mentioned role with his wife and three children. He has authored numerous peer reviewed research manuscripts and co-authored a book chapter on asthma. Dr. Mitchell's clinical interests are in asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), chronic eosinophilic airways disease, autoimmune pulmonary diseases, Sarcoidosis.

- Title
- Implication of the upper respiratory tract microbiota in long-COVID patients and the role of the new emerging beneficial bacterium Dolosigranulum pigrum.
- Summary
- COVID-19 is a new disease with high mortality caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and responsible for the ongoing global pandemic. Different studies performed over the past year demonstrated a link between COVID-19 severity and the nasopharynx microbiota, however, studies investigating changes in microbiome components with regards to the aftermath of the disease, such as full recovery or development of long-term COVID-19 symptoms are still lacking. This project aims to fill this knowledge gap by performing an in-depth characterization of microbial communities associated with the upper respiratory tract of patients that developed long-term COVID-19 symptoms and those who presented full recovery using metagenomics and state-of-art statistical analysis. In addition, the protective role of the bacterium Dolosigranulum pigrum against COVID-19 will also be investigated through genomics and immunoassay procedures. This proposal will advance our knowledge and help the scientific community by shedding light on the composition of the nasopharynx microbiota and its role in patients' recovery. By investigating the genetic features of a new emerging beneficial bacterium of the upper respiratory tract, we aim at elucidating its role for the host and probiotic potential against severe and long-term SARS-CoV-2 outcome.
