Research Expertise

Description

My research interests are based in medical education, neuroscience and cancer. The key direction of my research is to reveal how dietary interventions, such as the ketone diet (KD), affect brain development and cancer progression. Such diets are becoming increasingly popular due to their effectiveness in health maintenance and to treat neurological disorders (PMID: 29689338). Both cancer and stem cells share a similar metabolic profile, which may be manipulated in low carbohydrate diets to starve cancer cells of their preferred biosynthetic requirements. My research group aims to address two crucial research questions: a) To investigate the unknown effects of ketone metabolism on brain development long term. b) To clarify the effects of ketone bodies on cancer cell growth as the reported roles of metabolic substrates in experimental paradigms are paradoxical. To support this research, I have established a modern tissue laboratory which has facilitated 35 undergraduate projects, Erasmus and visiting academic research, one MD, five taught MSc theses, two MSc and one PhD over 5 years. An additional MSc researcher has been appointed and will commence his experimentation in May, 2022. Funding has been secured to support this research. Additional funding calls including the 'World Cancer Research Fund International' and the 'Anatomical Society PhD Studentship Award' have been identified. Extraordinary progress has been made to date culminating in the publication of reviews, original articles and abstract presentations. In tandem with my biological research interests, I maintain a successful medical education research program, underpinning the evolving role of anatomy is modern medical curricula. I am recognized internationally as a key opinion leader in this field and consider this research vital in driving teaching innovation. Funding: Deans Award for Innovation in Teaching, Anatomical Society, Wellcome trust, National Forum, March of Dimes, Laidlaw Foundation, Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education Postgraduate Scholarship, Faculty Safety Fund, School of Medicine, TCD.
