Biography

Dr Catherine Flynn graduated from Medicine at Queens University Belfast in 1995 (M.B.,BCh.B.A.O). She completed internal medicine training (Belfast City Hospital Training Scheme), gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh in 1998 (MRCP(Edin)). She moved to Dublin where she completed higher speciality training in haematology in 2004 and obtained membership of the Royal College of Pathologists, London (FRCPath). Her haematology training took place in Ireland and later at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, USA where she completed a 3-year fellowship in stem cell transplantation. She was awarded a doctorate of medicine (MD) from Queen's University Belfast in 2008 for post graduate research performed in Minneapolis and completed at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium under the mentorship of Professor Catherine Verfaillie.

She returned to Dublin in 2007 to take up an appointment of consultant haematologist at St James's Hospital Dublin including the national bone marrow transplant unit and Coombe Women and Infant's University Hospital where she works at present. While in this position, she has been the National Specialist Director for higher specialist training in haematology (2011-2014) and continues to have an active interest in post graduate training and education.

Dr Catherine Flynn's active clinical and research interests include myeloid malignancies and bone marrow failure syndromes including paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH). She is a clinical and academic lead in the field of stem cell transplantation and in 2021 was appointed national lead for the stem cell transplant program at St James's Hospital.

Dr Flynn is a member of the NCCP myeloid and cytogenetics subgroups and co-organiser of the Acute Leukaemia forum annual meeting for the past 10 years. She has been a Principle Investigator (PI) for several clinical trials and currently is the National PI for the HOVON AML 150 study recently launched in Ireland, National PI for a Pharmaceutical trial examining a biosimilar (ABP 959) in PNH and Co-PI for a pharma sponsored trial in ruxilotininb refractory myelofibrosis (Freedom -2).

Simultaneously, Dr Flynn has an interest in the field of maternal health and haematological diseases in pregnancy. She has published on the presentation of rare diseases in pregnancy and has a research interest in thrombocytopenia in pregnancy and the continued public health problem of iron deficiency in women of childbearing age. She has represented and discussed haematology related concerns to HSE led national interest groups during the introduction of the legislation for termination of pregnancy and transfusion in massive post-partum haemorrhage.
