Professor Catherine Hayes
Assoc Prof/Specialist in Public Health, Public Health & Primary Care
Biography
Catherine Hayes obtained her undergraduate medical degree from University College Cork. She completed the Cork Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice. She then undertook a Master's in Public Health at University College Dublin. Having completed Higher Specialist Training in Public Health Medicine she was appointed Specialist in Public Health Medicine in the Eastern Health Board, now part of the Health Service Executive (HSE). She obtained her Doctorate from the School of Medicine at UCD. She was appointed Associate Professor in Public Health/Specialist in Public Health Medicine at Trinity College Dublin in 2011 in a joint academic-service post with the HSE.
She is a recipient of advanced career development training awards in cancer prevention from the National Institutes for Health US including the highly competitive and prestigious Training in Dissemination and Implementation Research (TIDIRH) Programme at National Cancer Institute in 2016 and was a key contributor to TIDIRH Ireland training in 2018.
The key direction of her research is to address the major worldwide societal preventable problems of tobacco and obesity identified as causing major global disease burden, deaths, and disability, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the research themes of "Cancer" and "Inclusive Society". It is informed by her work as a public health specialist in the Health Intelligence division of Research and Evidence within HSE to address the impact of research outcomes on policy; on health service planning and delivery and by the science of dissemination and implementation,
She has generated approximately 3m in research grant funding since her appointment to TCD. In the HRB funded We Can Quit2 trial HRB (Definitive Interventions and Feasibility Awards (DIFA, 2017) she led an international research team to pilot a community-based smoking cessation intervention We Can Quit (WCQ) for socio-economically disadvantaged women, delivered by trained local women. Strong peer reviewed publications were echoed by impact: WCQ is now embedded in HSE stop smoking services and as a programme in the Healthy Ireland Strategic Action Plan, providing model for action in Europe.
In a current HRB funded Applied Partnership Award (APA, 2019), her research and public health expertise is guiding optimisation and scale-up Implementation of Make Every Contact (by a Health Professional) Count (MECC), an evidence-based approach to decreasing cancer and other chronic diseases.
The Choosing Healthy Eating for Infant Health (CHErIsH) was a HRB-funded study conducted from 2016 to 2020. The study aimed to develop, implement and evaluate a complex intervention to support and promote healthy infant feeding practices among parents and primary caregivers within primary care settings to help reduce the risk of childhood obesity
She is a Trainer and Examiner for the Faculty of Public Health Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI), including two terms as Vice-Dean and Board Member. She was awarded Fellowship of the RCPI in 2020. She has over 100 publications and is an Associate Editor of the journal Pilot and Feasibility Studies. Prof Hayes supervises and examines PhD and Masters students. She was a Member of the 2017-20 academic assessment panel for the Structured Population and Health-services Research Education) Programme (SPHeRE), to develop future leaders in Population Health. She is a mentor for the TCD Aurora, Women in Leadership programme. She was recently honoured by election to Fellowship in Trinity College (April 2021). She is appointed by the Minister for Health to the newly formed National Research Ethics Committee. She is current President of the UK and Ireland Society for Social Medicine and Population Health, former External Liaison Officer and Senior Mentor. She is a long-standing member of the European Public Health Association.

Research Expertise
Description
Professor Hayes is an experienced population health trial methodologist with an excellent record in Population Health and Implementation Science and in translation of research evidence into policy and practice to achieve maximum impact for health improvement. Her research addresses the development, implementation and evaluation of targeted interventions addressing behavioural risk factors, in particular tobacco and obesity-related determinants in prevention of chronic diseases using implementation science methodologies. Her significant research in tobacco has principally been as PI of population health trials, addressing implementation and outcomes of smoking cessation interventions on women's health. Her research is informed by the science of dissemination and implementation, collaborations with the health sector and local communities addressing the impact of research outcomes on health services and on policy. She uses her joint academic service and leadership role to advance policy implementation and health and health service improvement in the Health Service Executive. Her journal articles, policy briefs, presentations/workshops, have impacted on scientific world and influenced implementation by policymakers and senior health service managers. Professor Hayes continues to have a key role in developing capacity in implementation science research.Projects
- Title
- Implementation of Making Every Contact Count (MECC): developing a collaborative strategy to optimise and scale-up MECC
- Summary
- Many chronic illnesses can be prevented if people adopt healthier behaviours. Behavioural change through "Make Every Contact (by a Health Professional) Count (MECC)" is an evidence-based approach to decreasing cancer and other chronic diseases. The Making Every Contact Count (MECC) programme, in the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE), aims to train all healthcare professionals to support patients to make healthier lifestyle choices during routine healthcare contacts. In this multidisciplinary project, the HSE MECC Team and academic researchers work together to create a strategy to optimise expertise and scale-up the implementation of MECC more widely to maximise the chances of programme success.

- We Can Quit 2 (WCQ2): A pilot cluster randomized trial of a peer-led community-based smoking cessation intervention for disadvantaged women in Ireland
- Summary
- The 'We Can Quit2' (WCQ2) pilot study is a pragmatic two-arm parallel-group cluster randomised controlled trial;. the aim is to explore the feasibility and acceptability of trial processes including recruitment and to provide estimates of sample size needed for an effectiveness RCT. This RCT will assess the impact of a community-based smoking cessation intervention for women living in disadvantaged areas on short and medium term cessation rates. This intervention (We Can Quit,WCQ), was previously developed and examined in promising feasibility research.

- Title
- Designing, evaluating and implementing a pilot complex intervention in childhood obesity
- Summary
- This is an interdisciplinary collaboration involving researchers, policymakers and practitioners from University College Cork, National University of Ireland Galway, Trinity College Dublin and Mallow Primary Healthcare Centre. Its purpose is to develop future leaders in population health and health services research specifically in Health Economics, Implementation Science and Behaviour Change. The ICE Fellows work together to design, implement and evaluate a pilot complex intervention to promote optimal infant feeding practices in primary care.
