Dr. Brendan O'Shea
Adjunct Assistant Professor, Public Health & Primary Care
Dr Brendan O' Shea graduated BA MB BCh BAO ex TCD in 1986, completing Specialist Training in General Practice in 1989. He is currently on the Specialist Divisions of The IMC for General Practice and Occupational Medicine. Following a period in full time Clinical practice in these disciplines, he became involved with both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education from 2005, initially as Undergraduate Tutor, as a GP Trainer, and currently as Assistant Programme Director at The TCD HSE GP Training Scheme, which is co located with The Department of Public health and Primary Care. He has also served on the Exceutive of The ICGP as Communications Chairman 2000-2003.
He is currently Medical Director at Kildare Doctors on Call in Kildare, and also on the Council of The Irish College of General Practitioners.
DescriptionCurrently completing MD on Childhood Overweight in General Practice, under the supervision of Prof Tom O' Dowd, expected completion 2013, and funded by The national Children's Research Centre. Additional current interests include end of life care planning, delayed antibiotic prescribing in general practice, and service development in General Practice, including Minor Injuries Service, GP Special Interests, General Practice Management of patinents with complex co morbidities, and complaints management in the out of hours environment.
- General Practice management of childhood overweight
- Research Question: Is it acceptable for GPs to routinely ccheck weight of children presenting for unrelated routine care in general practice. Project comprises two elements, including a survey on a 20% sample of Irish GPs examining their current beliefs, practices and concerns in this area of care, and secondly a study on the acceptability to parents and their children of checking body mass index of 5-12 year olds presenting for routine care in General Practice.
