Professor Yuri Volkov : Scientist, Innovator, Mentor, Educator, Friend and Colleague

It is with great sadness that we announce the premature passing of our friend and colleague Yuri Volkov, Chair and Professor of Molecular and Translational Medicine at the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute and Fellow of Trinity College Dublin.
Yuri joined Professor Kelleher's group and the Department of Clinical Medicine in 1995, after a brilliant career in Moscow, with an MD from the Moscow Medical University and a PhD in biomedical sciences at the Institute of Immunology, Moscow. From the early years of his career at Trinity College, Yuri distinguished himself as a sharp scientist, acute innovator and exciting educator.
To mention just a few of his achievements; he published a number of breakthrough papers in Immunology, Advanced Imaging, Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine. He was among the inventors of Cellix Ltd. technology and the developers of advanced nanotechnologies focus on cancer detection. On the latter, he was awarded and coordinated the largest European Union Framework 7 project called NAMDIATREAM which in 2015 won the Best Flash European project in nanotechnology. Since then, Yuri had been involved in several other high profile large European projects which also reached prestigious scientific and clinical milestones.
The Nanomedicine and Molecular Imaging group was his research group which he founded from the onset of Nanomedicine in 2005. His collaboration spanned across every discipline present in College, from Chemistry, Physics and Biochemistry, to the Arts and Humanities. His past and present team mourn the loss of a scientific and a life mentor.
As an educator Yuri was an exciting lecturer, a great mentor and a critical advisor which inspired many of his students to succeed in their professional life and career.
Yuri was a true gentleman who valued the personal relationships he had with all friends, colleagues, and collaborators. He cared deeply about all the people he worked with and above all, he was a devoted husband, and a committed and loving father.
Rest in peace Yuri, you will be sadly missed.
