Position: Researcher
Dr. Helen Keegan is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Histopathology, TCD and Molecular Scientist at Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital. She studied at Trinity College Dublin and Dublin Institute of Technology and received her PhD in 2005 for her thesis which focussed on human papillomavirus and Chlamydia trachomatis prevalence and genotypes in the Irish cervical screening population. She has been a member of the Cerviva research team since 2006. Her research has focussed on the development and evaluation of new technologies for HPV and biomarker detection for improved screening for cervical pre-cancers, mainly in the form of lab-on-a-chip diagnostics. She has worked with all the major technology providers in this space and continues to evaluate new technologies for HPV and genotype detection in the cervix and more recently in head and neck cancers. She has published widely in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented at international conferences. She has a wide range of molecular expertise and her other areas of research interest include fetal DNA, pre-natal screening for chromosomal abnormalities, RhesusD genotyping, gestational trophoblast disease, female gynaecological cancers and prostate cancers.
