Minister of Health opens the second health innovation hub
|
Health Innovation Hub Ireland is launching a new TCD Diploma as part of the School of Medicine
Of the four Health Innovation Hub Ireland (HIHI) academic partners, Trinity College Dublin has specific responsibility for the delivery of educational products that will stimulate a culture of innovation within the HSE. Led by Professor Seamas Donnelly, a new TCD School of Medicine Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Innovation is now open for applications. The one year programme will offer fundamental grounding in key subjects: design thinking and embedding a culture of innovation; process innovation; lean thinking; social innovation and health economics; innovation and leadership. Graduates are expected to lead the adoption and embedding of innovation in the Irish health system. The Diploma will run its first cohort this September 2019. There are up to 24 places with a 50/50 split of both open/industry and HSE places. Course information and application

Provost Teaching Awards 2018
Prof David Kane from the School of Medicine received the award for “his passion, dedication, commitment, and inspiration”.
“His approach to curriculum design and classroom delivery is underpinned by a clear and visionary view of the needs of the medical profession and of the relationship between education and the practice of medicine”, Prendergast said.
Prof Lina Zgaga from the School of Medicine was also recognised for her teaching. She was described as “the best and most rounded teacher I have worked with in my 22 years in College”.
“At the heart of her teaching philosophy is a powerful empathy with the student’s individual learning experience”, Prendergast said.

New publication from Pathways to Universal Healthcare Project
The latest publication from the Pathways team entitled 'Ireland's health care system and the crisis: a case study in the struggle for a capable welfare state' part of a comparative series of papers can be found on this link with more publications due in 2019 on financial projection, the HSE's Integrated Care Programme for Older People and other international comparative work. Slides from the final Pathways seminar and their presentation to the Oireachtas Health Committee can be found through this link.

Peter May wins HRB Applying Research into Policy & Practice (ARPP) Fellowship
Dr Peter May, postdoctoral researcher in the Centre for Health Policy and Management, has launched a new HRB Applying Research into Policy & Practice (ARPP) funded project to be conducted in the Centre and in TILDA: the Irish Future Elderly Model (IFEM). The IFEM is a demographic/ economic microsimulation model to project future health care needs and costs among older people in Ireland, and to evaluate ex-ante interventions and policy options in this population. It will be created in collaboration with the Department of Health and the University of Southern California. |

New Student Research Committee for the Health Disciplines
12 Students across the health disciplines have been elected to represent the student body to work with the School of Medicine Research Committee in linking interested health science students with research at the undergraduate level. A launch night was held on the 18th April.

Trinity Interdisciplinary Forum for Healthcare
The TIFH, is a new society founded by a number of students from a range of Healthcare disciplines. We aim to foster greater interdisciplinary engagement amongst students as well as normalising an interdisciplinary approach to patient care at an early stage of training. Following our committee elections, we hosted an Inaugural welcome evening in TBSI where we were joined by a number of guest speakers including Dr Emer Guinan and Prof Marie Smith who discussed the value that TIFH will add to interdisciplinary learning in the College. Dr Clodagh Nolan presented her Research at the International AHEAD Conference in Croke Park Dublin 20th March 2019
Dr. Clodagh Nolan in collaboration with Cecily Roche and Declan Treanor of the Disability Services presented their paper entitled ‘Auditing Learning Environments from a Sensory Perspective’. This important research paves the way for academics to enhance learning spaces for students experiencing sensory processing issues including those on the Autistic Spectrum and those with ADHD. In a previous research paper by Dr Nolan published within the American Journal of Occupational Therapy Dr. Nolan has identified a range of difficulties within higher education environments that can impede a student with sensory processing issues integration into the academic and social spheres of college life.

Discipline of Occupational Therapy welcomed Visiting Professors to Dr. Jennifer Creek, Dr. Madeline Duncan and Dr. Kit Sinclair to Trinity College
On the 11th March Dr. Clodagh Nolan of the Discipline of Occupational Therapy organised with assistance from the Visiting Professor Fund international speakers from the UK Dr Jennifer Creek, South Africa Dr Madeline Duncan and Hong Kong Dr Kit Sinclair . They met with the students in the pm where they explored the many modes of professional reasoning including ‘upstreaming and down streaming’ ones interventions depending on the group one is interacting with. Dimensions of practice requiring occupational therapy reasoning for ‘working on the margins’ were shared with practitioners in the evening in an insightful and enlightening presentation.

Prof Steve Thomas gives Boehm Lecture on Public Health and Healthcare - 6 March, 2019
On the 6th of March, Centre Director Steve Thomas gave the Boehm Lecture at the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health on the topic of Sláintecare, the Irish ten-year plan for health reform through political consensus. His keynote address was followed by a panel discussion with additional panel members Dr Rueben Devlin, Carolyn Hughes Tuohy and Julie Drury. New RCPI Masterclass in Geriatric Oncology
A new masterclass in Geriatric Oncology was delivered on March 6th by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI), recognising the increased need for expansion of educational activities in this area of cancer care for the wider medical community as part of our national cancer strategy.
This Masterclass focused on Geriatric Oncology, specifically radiotherapy and chemotherapy in older adults with cancer, prescribing issues in Geriatric Oncology and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) in older people with cancer. It was designed and delivered jointly by Anne Horgan, University Hospital Waterford, Shane O’Hanlon, St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Paul Gallagher, Cork University Hospital and Anita O’Donovan, Discipline of Radiation Therapy, Trinity College Dublin.

Delivering an Occupational Therapy Professional Practice Paradigm for working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder - 4 March, 2019
A day-long professional training workshop was delivered to more than 20 occupational therapists from across Ireland who work with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder by Dr. Katie Cremin, Claire Gleeson, Dr. Clodagh Nolan and Sarah Quinn in the Discipline of Occupational Therapy. Sponsored by our professional association (AOTI), the authors presented innovative practices, combining research findings with clinical experience. There is an identified need for further workshops to assist occupational therapists, primarily working in mental health services to support individuals with ASD whom are increasingly accessing services.

Erasmus Plus Exchange Programme - March 2019
The Discipline of Radiation Therapy recently hosted faculty of the University of Zagreb, Croatia as part of the Erasmus Plus exchange programme. Velimir Karadza and Vedran Manestar visited the Discipline and associated clinical placement sites in mid-March to assist them in the development of the clinical practice component of their educational programme for Radiation Therapists in Croatia.

Nearly 70 members of the public joined researchers on the day to hear all about the progress, the potential and opportunities for public involvement in autism genomics research. There were many highlights of the day but special mentions go to Professor Gallagher’s talks facilitated conversations over lunch discussing challenges in autism research (keep an eye out for our upcoming video) and live-art work. Jailbreak 2019 - 23 February, 2019
Amy Worrall, a final year medical student in Trinity College Dublin, and Fátimah Alaya, an RCSI medical student took part in Jailbreak 2019. Their adventures raised €6000 for St. Vincent de Paul and Amnesty International and was covered by the Irish Times read on. Since then, Amy and Fátimah have been awarded the Amnesty International Ireland Best Student Fundraisers and were presented prizes at the Amnesty Annual Conference on 23rd March 2019. |

Global Health Class of 2018/19 networking event - 18 February, 2019
Global Health class of 2018/19 in collaboration with Irish Forum for Global Health successfully held a networking event on 18th of February 2019 at Trinity College Dublin Center for Global Health. The event brought academia, civic societies, alumni and Irish officials together. According to the IFGH student representatives, Megan Hayes and Yibeltal Mekonnen, the purpose of the event was to provide a platform for experience sharing, networking and personal reflections from the field. Students of the class wanted to capitalize on the IFGH sponsored event to gather lessons for their future careers and listen to experts on the ground.

Trinity symposium shows breadth of translational cancer research at TTMI - 15 February 2019
The Trinity Translational Medicine Institute (TTMI) held its 3rd annual scientific symposium recently to align as closely as possible with World Cancer Day. The symposium focussed on cancer precision medicine, with 110 registered researchers and clinicians attending from across the oncology community. Read more

Prof Steve Thomas presented to European Commission - February, 2019
Centre Director Steve Thomas is currently consulting on an ongoing year-long project with the Expert Group on Health Systems Performance Assessment in the European Commission to share his expertise on health systems resilience. He presented to the Expert Group on 12 February 2019 sharing findings from Centre research on the resilience of the Irish health systems during the financial crisis and how and to what extend it withstood the shocks caused by the crisis. A full agenda of the meeting can be found on this link. In collaboration with the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies he will also be producing a policy brief on the same topic to guide resilience in the face of future crises across European health systems.

The Discipline of Occupational Therapy Practice Education Team presented on the Development of the OT Practice Education Strategic Plan at the 2019 Irish Network of Medical Educators Annual Conference - 7 February, 2019
Claire I. Gleeson, Practice Education Coordinator in the Discipline of Occupational Therapy and Carole Murphy, Practice Tutor in Beaumont Hospital Dublin, presented on behalf of the Occupational Therapy Practice Education Team, at the 2019 Irish Network of Medical Educators Annual Conference in NUI Galway on the 7th February. The presentation entitled; ‘The Sum of its parts” - A strategic and structured Practice Education Team approach to the delivery of an holistic student centred practice education OT Programme at Trinity’ highlighted the background and rationale for developing a strategic approach to practice education in order to plan and deliver an enhanced practice education programme for all stakeholders: Students, placement providers, and the university. It further identified the format established to critically review and identify strengths, challenges, and targets for development, as well as presenting the vision for practice education going forward where the complex process and dynamic interaction of the classroom curriculum is connected with clinical teaching and learning contexts.

TY Programme - February, 2019
This year’s TY programme had 24 students from schools all over Dublin and Kildare.
The programme was filled with interesting and varied activities. The students did experiments in the Physiology Lab, and had an extensive tour of TCD campus. They joined third year students for a day of Clinical Skills lessons and practice, attended a lecture given by Breast Surgeon Ms Liz Connolly. Read more

JS Prichard Award - January, 2019
Dr Lucy Chapman the recipient of the JS Prichard Award 2017-2018 as voted by the final medical year class of that year. The award presented after Grand Rounds in January 2019 consists of a medal and an honorarium. International Atomic Energy Agency Collaboration
Michelle Leech Associate Professor, Discipline of Radiation Therapy was a contributor on the recently published International Atomic Energy Agency Human Health Reports No. 16 on Introduction of Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) into Clinical Practice. The report details the recommended guidelines for IGRT implementation and will be widely utilised by Member states initiating IGRT (https://www-pub.iaea.org/MTCD/Publications/PDF/P1827_web.pdf).

Remembering Professor Nasir Mahmud - December, 2018
Professor Nasir Mahmud : A gathering was held at St James’s Hospital Endoscopy Unit to remember and pay tribute to Professor Mahmud who died on 18th April 2018. Colleagues from both St James’s Hospital and Trinity College Dublin came together to reflect on his life. A photograph and plaque were unveiled in the Endoscopy Recovery Unit. He is sadly missed and will be remembered fondly

Dr Geraldine Foley, Assistant Professor, and Dr Deirdre Connolly, Associate Professor, of the Discipline of Occupational Therapy, have each been awarded a highly prestigious Provost’s PhD Project Award. Each award will now fund a 4-year full-time PhD student. Each Provost’s PhD Project Award comprises an annual PhD stipend of €16,000 and full EU/non-EU fees for the successful PhD applicant. The Provost’s PhD Project Awards are generously funded through alumni donations and Trinity’s Commercial Revenue Unit

Andrew Lydon Scholarship: Four-year scholarship for research into motor neurone disease - 21 September, 2019
On 21 September 2018 Dr Ranga Chipika was awarded the prestigious Andrew Lydon scholarship to pursue her research on motor neuron disease (MND). Dr Chipika is a medical graduate from Trinity working on the characterisation of MND-associated brain changes in the Academic Unit of Neurology under the supervision of Prof Peter Bede. The scholarship was set up in memory of Andrew Lydon, a young computer programmer from Connemara who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in 2010. The scholarship was awarded to Dr Chipika based on her innovative study design and promising preliminary results. At the award ceremony, Dr Chipika and members of the Academic unit of neurology met Andrew’s wife, children and the representatives of the Andrew Lydon trust to express their gratitude.

Health Research Board and Medical Research Charity Group Award
Dr Sarah Doyle (Innate Immune Regulation and Inflammation Lab) is the recipient of the Health Research Board (HRB) and Medical Research Charity Group (MRCG) award to research ‘Elucidation of the role of SARM1 in retinal homeostasis and oxidative stress-induced retinal degeneration’. Dr Doyle’s work is funded by the HRB and the charity, Fighting Blindness.

SFI TIDA Awards
Dr James Phelan, TB Laboratory Research Scientist, is a recipient of Science Foundation Ireland’s Technology Innovation Development Award to research ‘ Evaluating the immunometabolic potential of desferrioxamine to augment antibiotic treatment against Mycobacterium tuberculosis’.
Trinity College Dublin had 10 Category B applicants to SFI for the award with Dr Phelan the only TCD successful application of the Category B SFI TIDA award.

Dr Sarah Doyle (Innate Immune Regulation and Inflammation Lab), is a recipient of Science Foundation Ireland’s Technology Innovation Development Award to research ‘Investigating the use of IL-36 to reduce oedema and neovascularisation in models of retina degeneration’.
Trinity College Dublin had 29 Category A applicants for the award, 10 of which were successful with Dr Doyle being one of the 10.

Congratulations to Fionnuala MacMahon and Leah White, who have been awarded The Meath Foundation Prize for 2nd year Medical Students.
They were part of the Research Team who investigated - ‘IBD PATIENTS ARE FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DEVELOP ALL TYPES OF SKIN CANCER POSSIBLY RELATED TO HIGH RATES OF IMMUNOSUPPRESSION; WITH YOUNG PATIENTS PARTICULARLY AT RISK OF MELANOMA’ under the supervision of Prof McNamara (Director of TAGG), Dr Anne-Marie Tobin and Dr Catriona Gallagher.

Occupational therapy students from TCD-SIT One Year Occupational Therapy Degree Programme in Singapore visited Dublin during the first six weeks of Hilary term.
In addition to attending lectures and events at Trinity, they had the opportunity to meet and learn from occupational therapists in the Irish healthcare system which certainly broadened their perspectives and stimulated reflection in occupational therapy practice across different cultures. They also experienced wonderful Irish hospitality. Sláinte! |

Exercise Oncology Research Group awarded research fundingThe exercise oncology research group at the Discipline of Physiotherapy has been awarded over €1.5 million in research funding to examine questions related to exercise prescription in patients with cancer. The fund was awarded across four grants to Principle Investigators Professor Juliette Hussey, Dr Emer Guinan and Dr Grainne Sheill. Projects will investigate exercise models in surgical rehabilitation, rehabilitation and advanced cancer, as well as examining translation of research findings into clinical practice. |

Two teams represented TCD’s EMSSI in the 3rd National simwars competition involving all 5 of Ireland’s medical schools.
Teams had to brace through 3 simulation scenarios each, where they were expected to resuscitate and provide emergency care in a simulated scenario. The teams would like to thanks Dr. Karl Kavanagh and Dr. Kevin Brown for the intensive training sessions in St.James’s Hospital.
