Biography

Dr. Shuo Yin was appointed Assistant Professor within the Department of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering in January 2019. He received B.Eng and Ph.D from Dalian University of Technology in July 2007 and January 2013. From 2013 to 2015, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at University of Technology of Belfort-Montebiard in France and Wageningen University in the Netherland. He then moved to Dublin and was appointed a research fellow at the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in Trinity College Dublin. In 2017, he was awarded a prestigious GOIPD Postdoctoral Research Fellowship sponsored by Irish Research Council. He has published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is now severing as guest editors of "Journal of Thermal Spray Technology" and "Coatings", and editorial member of "Advances in mathematical physics", and reviewer of more than 30 journals. His current research interests are mainly focusing on additive manufacturing processes, including cold spraying (CS), selective laser melting (SLM) and digital light processing (DLP). He is now lecturing 4B6 Manufacturing Systems and Project Management, 3B3 Mechanics of Solids and 2MEMS10 Manufacturing Engineering Design.

    • A new strategy for strengthening additively manufactured cold spray deposits through in-process densification
  • Summary
    • Higher density and better mechanical properties are always desirable for additively manufactured deposits. In cold spray, this can be achieved by increasing either the pressure or the temperature of the processing gas (N2 in this study). However, the increased gas temperature may lead to increased oxidation, nitridation, phase changes, softening or even melting of particles, as well as damage of the cold spray nozzle made of polymer. Further, the excessive impact velocities at such conditions may trigger corrosion on the substrate surface [33,38]. These problems can, to a certain extent, be avoided with the usage of He as the processing gas. Unfortunately, as opposed to the relatively cheap and sustainable N2, the high cost of He is economically unfavorable and the reserves of He are limited on Earth. Naturally, the overall trend in cold spray industry is, therefore, to avoid using He. As a third alternative, a targeted adding of peening particles into the feedstock to densify the cold sprayed deposits may also improve their mechanical properties。 Unfortunately, these particles are likely to partially embed and result in unwanted stress concentrations, pores formation, and localized chemical heterogeneities. This project aims to develop a new strategy by using a combination of feedstock with wide size range distribution and low gas processing parameters to produce dense cold sprayed deposits with high mechanical properties due to the in-process densification effect of the rebound particles. At the expense of slightly increased costs of powders due to low deposition efficiency, this novel strategy can avoid all the aforementioned problems and presents an interesting alternative to spraying either at high temperatures or using expensive He.

    • Selective Laser Melting of Ti6Al4V alloy for tailored scaffolds into bone defects
  • Summary
    • Bone defects can be caused by several pathological conditions or by surgical procedures. These represent a thorny issue for the clinician. Ti6Al4V porous scaffold can be a good choice to treat the large-scale bone defects. Traditional prosthetic implant is mainly made through subtractive manufacturing methods such as cutting and forging. The main drawbacks of these techniques are the limitation of manufacturing complex prosthesis and the long period of production time. In order to effectively treat these defects and injuries, it is necessary to shorten the fabrication time and improve the accuracy of implantable bone scaffold substitutes. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an effective manufacturing process with high controllability and repeatability in terms of reliable mechanical and morphological properties for the porous implant to treat bone defect. SLM, as one of the modern additive manufacturing technologies, is now particularly attractive in the medical field. SLM technology can be applied to manufacture customized porous scaffold for substituting individual bone defect. In this research, the applicant aims to fabricate topology optimized scaffolds by SLM. In order to achieve the research goal, proper porous structure will be initially designed, and then the optimum SLM manufacturing parameters will be acquired by orthogonal experiment. Systemic study for the mechanical performance will also be conducted on the SLM porous scaffolds. Finally, research and development route of an individualized porous scaffold for bone defect patients will be acquired. Successful completion of this research will significantly promote the SLM technology in biomedical applications.
