Dr. Amir Pakdel
Assistant Professor, Mechanical, Manuf & Biomedical Eng


Amir is a transdisciplinary nanomaterials scientist, nanotechnology specialist, a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) principal investigator, and a lecturer at Trinity College Dublin's School of Engineering, Department of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering. Prior to joining TCD School of Engineering, Amir has served as:

● Lecturer/assistant professor in University College Dublin's School of Chemistry (Ireland)

● Research fellow in Trinity College Dublin's School of Chemistry (Ireland) & the Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN; Ireland)

● Research fellow in Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS; Japan) & National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS; Japan)

● Postdoctoral fellow in World Premier International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (WPI-MANA; Japan)

● Junior research fellow in National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS; Japan)

● Lecturer in Azad University (IAU; Iran).

Amir has received his PhD, MSc, and BSc in Materials Science & Engineering from The University of Tsukuba (Japan), The University of Tehran (Iran), and Shiraz University (Iran), respectively. He has investigated diverse and crossdisciplinary research topics, including:

● Flexible, wearable, and printable electronics

● Nanoengineering of thermoelectric materials for waste heat energy harvesting

● Synthesis and electron microscopy analysis of 1D & 2D nanomaterials (special interest in boron nitride)

● Surface functionalisation and interfacial interactions at molecular/atomic level

● Hydrophobicity and oleophilicity of hierarchical nanostructured surfaces for water treatment and biomedical applications

● Development of metal- ceramic- and polymer-matrix nanocomposites for various applications

To date, Amir has received multiple awards for his research work and secured +1 million Euro competitive research funding and fellowships as principal investigator from European and Asian agencies; the most recent of which is the SFI starting investigator research grant (2020-24) to develop novel thermoelectric nanomaterials for manufacturing small wearable energy scavengers that can convert body heat into electricity. Besides his main research projects, he has also been collaborating with a number of research groups worldwide on multidisciplinary nanomaterials science, chemistry, physics, and engineering projects.

Amir is an editorial board member of Frontiers in Chemistry, and AIMS Materials Science, and a reviewer for more than 30 journals published by Springer Nature, the American Chemical Society (ACS), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Elsevier, and Wiley.
