Dr. Garret O'Donnell (STAM) gave a perspective on Industry 4.0 for medical device manufacturing and provided an overview of some case studies within the medical device manufacturing industry based in Ireland.

Medical device manufacturing pushes many manufacturing process to their technological limits, with extreme demands on precision, challenges working at micro scales, and challenges working with "difficult-to-cut" materials such as Titanium and Cobalt Chrome. The emergence of the industrial internet and the theme of "Industry 4.0" presents high end medical device manufacturing companies with opportunities to extract data from their processes in realtime, and use this data to guarantee process stability, drive process optimisations, and track process performance. The ability to extract digital process signatures from manufacturing processes takes some of the mystery out of processes for senior management, and opens possibilities of tracking the process history per part.
