Glossary

The Library appreciates not all terms used on this website or by Library staff are immediately clear. It is hoped the following glossary will clarify some terminology, either specific to the Library or used in a way outside its usual meaning.

1872 Catalogue

Another name for the Printed Catalogue

Accessions Catalogue

One of the Library's catalogues, of material received before 1963, but after 1872. More details available on the Guide to the Catalogues page

Admissions Counter

Area in the Berkeley Library where visiting readers register to use the Library, postgraduates register for a Carrel, and Inter-Library Loans are collected. See Berkeley Library, Ground Floor (PDF 101KB) for floorplan

ALCID Scheme to allow users from one library to visit another. Trinity College Dublin readers should see the Visiting Other Libraries page; visiting readers should see the Admissions page

Alerts

The Library's blog allows readers to sign up to the Library's RSS feed. The most recent alerts are shown on the Library's homepage

ARTS

Term no longer used - prefix to shelfmark on some books. Equivalent to Open Access

ASR

Automated Stack Request. See Automated Stack Request page

ATIC

Assistive Technology Information Centre - rooms located in the Library where assistive technology is available for students registered with the Disability Service

BLU

Book of Kells

A 9th-century illuminated manuscript; one of the most valuable treasures of Trinity College Dublin. Held in the Old Library. See the Book of Kells site

Bookstacks

Term no longer used - see Stacks

Borrowing

Borrowing privileges for different categories of readers are detailed on the Categories of Reader page

Call Number

Term no longer used - replaced by Shelfmark

Call Slip

Small form used to request nmaterial from Closed Access in certain circumstances. See Call Slips page

Carrel

Reservable work area for postgraduates. See Carrels page

Closed Access

Material in storage, only accessible by Library staff. See Stacks Requests page

Computers

Limited numbers of PCs are available in the Library, or readers can use personal laptops. See Computing and Wi-Fi page

Counter Reserve Collection

Also known as the Short Loan Collection. Items in heavy demand for use in the Library only. See Borrowing and Renewing page

Databases

Electronic guides to literature in particular subject areas. See Databases and E-Books page

Docket

Term no longer used - replaced by call slip. See Call Slips page

Duty Librarian

A reference librarian on duty to answer question. See Duty Librarian page

E  

Early Printed Books

Department of Early Printed Books and Special Collections. See Early Printed Books and Special Collections page

E-Journals

Electronic versions of journals. Subscriptions are paid for by the Library

E-Mail

E-mails are sent reminding readers to return books to the Library, to collect items that have been reserved and to collect items that have been ordered online using Automated Stack Requests. Occasionally readers will also be sent emails to give details of revised Library opening hours, or about Lunchtime Training Sessions.

Fifteen-Minute Rule

Desks in the Library left unattended for 15 minutes or longer can be cleared and used by another student. See Library Regulations page

Fines

Fines are charged for overdue or lost items. See Fines page

ID Card

For Trinity College Dublin readers, the Trinity College Dublin ID card. For visiting readers, their ALCID card, and/or Visiting Reader Card, and/or home institution ID card. See Admissions page

Institutional Repository An online space to bring together the items produced by members of an institution, such as articles or theses. In Trinity College Dublin this is known as TARA

Internet

Limited PCs for restricted (i.e., research based) Internet use are available in the Library. Trinity College Dublin readers may find the wireless network (Wi-Fi) more convenient. See Computing and Wi-Fi page

Journals

Academic publications that a published on a recurring basis, such as the Journal of Advanced Nursing

Lunchtime Training Sessions

Held during Michaelmas Term (September - December) to help new readers make the most of the Library’s Online Catalogue and our other electronic resources. Detailed under Alerts on the Library homepage, on the Library blog, and on noticeboards

Manuscripts Department

Properly the Manuscripts and Archives Research Library. Library department that looks after treasures such as the Book of Kells, as well as more modern collections such as the Samuel Beckett papers. Entrance requires a ticket from the Admissions Counter for all users

Map Library The Glucksman Map Library. Located in the Basement, Ussher Library (PDF 26KB). See Map Library page
Missing Online Catalogue term - item should be in the Library, but not currently locatable, and hence not borrowable
MUS-LEN Prefix on books - music books, part of the Undergraduate Lending Collection. Held in the Ussher Library

Named Collection Specific resources in Early Printed Books generally called after the name of the original collector, or the type of items, e.g., Pollard Collection, World War 1 Recruiting Posters
O  

Official Publications

An item is an official publication if the publisher is a government department or public authoritiy (including state-sponsored bodies), e.g. Stationery Office, Dublin; TSO London; United Nations etc. Many of these items are collected together in the Library in a location known as OPUB - see the Official Publications & the European Documentation Centre site

Old Library

One of the most famous buildings in Dublin. Contains the Long Room, Book of Kells, Early Printed Books and Special Collections and the Manuscripts and Archives Research Library. See the Book of Kells site

Online Catalogue

Used to find an item in the Library in most cases, called Stella Search

Online Ordering

See ASR

OPAC

Term no longer used - stands for Online Public Access Catalogue. See Online Catalogue

Open Access

Category of material, which is Open Shelf, that can be borrowed by staff and postgraduates. Cannot be borrowed by undergraduates. See Borrowing and Renewing.

OR making scholarly publications freely accessable by anyone in the world using an Internet connection

Open Shelf

On the publicly accessible shelves. The opposite of Closed Access material

OPUB

Abbreviation of Official Publications

Orientation Space

The area with the yellow floor that links the Berkeley, Lecky and Ussher Libraries. Technically part of the Ground Floor, Ussher Library (PDF 39KB)

P  

Periodical

A publication that is published on a regular and ongoing basis - daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. A newspaper like the Irish Times is a periodical, as are magazines like Vogue or Heat or a journal like Nature or Science

Periodicals Reading Room

Another name for the Journals Reading Room

PIN

A four-digit Library PIN is issued to certain visiting readers when they register, to enable them to use ASR. No longer used for Trinity College Dublin members

Printed Catalogue

One of the Library's catalogues, of material received before 1872. More details available on the Guide to the Catalogues page

Reading Room

Another phrase for individual libraries

Recalling Under certain circumstances readers can recall items from other readers, meaning the current borrower must return it. See the Recalling page

REF/BIB Books

Prefix on books - general reference books (such as dictionaries, encyclopaediae) and bibliographies located in the Basement, Berkeley Library (PDF 101KB)

Renewing

Under certain circumstances borrowers can renew items online (students only) or in person. See the Renewing page

Research Area Area of the Berkeley Library that brings together key printed sources for historical research. See Research Area page

Reserving

Under certain circumstances readers can reserve items online, meaning the current borrower cannot renew it. See the Reserving page

RSS

Really Simple Syndication, a way of getting online alerts.

Santry

Santry Book Repository is located about five miles from the College and is used as a storage facility. See the Stacks Requests page

Service Counter Areas of the Library where items are borrowed, returned and renewed
Shelfmark Address of an item on the shelves. For items that are Open Shelf, this is normally made up of a "Dewey Decimal" number
Short Loan Collection Also known as the Counter Reserve Collection. Items in heavy demand for use in the Library only. See Categories of Collection page
SJ Prefix on books - part of the Undergraduate Lending Collection. Held in the John Stearne Medical Library
SJR Prefix on books - part of the Open Access Collection. Held in the John Stearne Medical Library

Stacks

Properly, Closed Access Bookstacks. Storage areas in Santry and the Berkeley, Ussher, and Early Printed Books areas of the Library

Stella Search Version of the Online Catalogue, with a "Google"-like interface

Each discipline studied in Trinity College has an associated librarian, to liaise with staff and students affiliated with that department

Trace Online Catalogue term - item should be in the Library, but not currently locatable, although being actively sought. Allows Reserving of other copies. Changed to Missing if the item remains lost
