RFID Tagging Project
The Library is initiating a major project to improve the security and circulation system for open-shelf collections in the Berkeley, Lecky, Ussher, Hamilton and John Stearne Medical libraries. This will involve the introduction of a new fleet of self-issue machines for borrowing and returning materials, the installation of new security panels at all entrances, and the application of Radio Frequency ID tags (RFID tags) to approximately 550,000 items on the open shelves.
A team of 'taggers' will move through the libraries to ensure that all items are tagged and encoded between now and Christmas, with a view to launching the new system in January 2020. The tagging project is likely to involve temporary rolling restrictions on access to specific collections, but we anticipate that no item will be unavailable for more than 1-2 days.
If readers urgently require a book, they are encouraged to speak to Library staff at the service counter in the relevant Library building. We will do our best to ensure you get the books you need in the shortest possible time.
To keep readers informed of progress, the A-Z list of subject areas below will be updated on a regular basis to track which collections have already been tagged, are currently being tagged, are just about to be tagged or will be tagged later in the term.
