Strategy 2015-2020: A Vision for a 21st Century Research Library

Research libraries are leaders in the democratisation of content and need to move beyond the digitisation of their collections to becoming digital entities in themselves to secure their futures, according to Helen Shenton, Librarian and Archivist at Trinity College Dublin who spoke at the launch of a new strategy for the Library on Thursday, October 8th, 2015.

Launch of the Library’s Strategy 2015-2020 and Year of Events

Thursday saw the Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Patrick Prendergast, launch The Library of Trinity College Dublin – Strategy 2015–2020 in the Science Gallery. The event took the form of a conversation between the Provost and the Deans of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Health Sciences; and Engineering, Maths and Science; together with the Librarian and College Archivist, Helen Shenton. The event was documented live on Twitter using the hashtag #futurelibrary.

Korean Books in the Library of Trinity College Dublin – Happy Hanguel Day!

Friday 9th October is Hanguel Day, which commemorates the creation of the Korean alphabet. Remember that Korean song Gangnam Style? In Hanguel, Gangnam Style is spelt 강남 스타일. As you can see the Hanguel alphabet is very different to any of the European alphabets. This may come across as daunting to learn, but it’s actually much easier to learn Korean than Chinese or Japanese because there are only 24 letters. It was created by the much-loved King Sejong the Great in the 15th century – before this Koreans used Hanja; based on the Chinese alphabet, this was much more difficult to learn as there are so many characters.

The most popular song of 2012 was of course, 강남 스타일.

When did the Great War end?: the time frames of World War I by Dr John Horne

Dr Horne recently retired as Professor of Modern European History at Trinity College Dublin. His research focuses on the history of twentieth-century France and the Great War from a comparative and transnational perspective. Dr Horne has published widely on the Great War, and edited and contributed to La guerre totale: le tournant de 1914-1915 (2010), A Companion to World War One (2010); and Our War: Ireland and the Great War (2008).

Kinsella Hall Study Tower Reopens 16:00 Monday 17 August 2015

The Library is delighted to announce that the Kinsella Hall Study Tower, on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors of the Ussher Library, will reopen at 16:00 on Monday 17 August 2015.

The 1st floor of the Ussher Library will be available as a 24-hour reading room from 16:00 on Monday 17 August and swipe access is via the Ussher Podium for College staff and students.

The Library wishes to thank our readers for their patience during the works to improve 24-hour study facilities. The Kinsella Hall Study Tower will now provide 497 study spaces, an increased capacity of 34%.
