Korean Books in the Library of Trinity College Dublin – Happy Hanguel Day!

Friday 9th October is Hanguel Day, which commemorates the creation of the Korean alphabet. Remember that Korean song Gangnam Style? In Hanguel, Gangnam Style is spelt 강남 스타일. As you can see the Hanguel alphabet is very different to any of the European alphabets. This may come across as daunting to learn, but it’s actually much easier to learn Korean than Chinese or Japanese because there are only 24 letters. It was created by the much-loved King Sejong the Great in the 15th century – before this Koreans used Hanja; based on the Chinese alphabet, this was much more difficult to learn as there are so many characters.

The most popular song of 2012 was of course, 강남 스타일.

Kinsella Hall Study Tower Reopens 16:00 Monday 17 August 2015

The Library is delighted to announce that the Kinsella Hall Study Tower, on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors of the Ussher Library, will reopen at 16:00 on Monday 17 August 2015.

The 1st floor of the Ussher Library will be available as a 24-hour reading room from 16:00 on Monday 17 August and swipe access is via the Ussher Podium for College staff and students.

The Library wishes to thank our readers for their patience during the works to improve 24-hour study facilities. The Kinsella Hall Study Tower will now provide 497 study spaces, an increased capacity of 34%.

Official Publications Collections Project, 1st Floor, Berkeley Library

To facilitate collection-related work the Official Publications Collections on the 1st floor, Berkeley Library will be closed to readers from Tuesday 28 July 2015. Readers wishing to access material from this area should seek assistance from Library staff at the Service Counter or Duty Librarian’s Desk in the Iveagh Hall, Berkeley Library.

Student Shelvers 2015/2016

The Library of Trinity College Dublin is now accepting applications for Student Shelvers for the 2015/2016 academic year. Applicants must be students of Trinity College Dublin.

Student shelvers are employed to work a minimum of 10 hours per week in the Berkeley, Lecky, Ussher and Hamilton Libraries on the main campus and the John Stearne Medical Library in the Trinity Centre, St James’s Hospital. The primary role of student shelvers is to sort, move and shelve library materials.

A full job description, selection criteria and the application form are available online. You will require your TCD network username and password to access these pages off campus.

If you are commencing studies in Trinity College Dublin in September 2015 and wish to apply please contact Kathryn Smith, Sub Librarian (Reading Room Services) to request an information and application pack.

The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is 12 noon, Monday 31 August 2015.
