The Manuscripts and Archives Research Library holds several collections relating to the development and practice of the visual arts in Ireland including the papers of two Directors of the National Gallery of Ireland:

  • MSS 6910-7079: the papers of Thomas Bodkin (1887-1961)
  • MSS 7985-8190: the papers of Thomas McGreevy (1893-1967)

Artists’ papers include:

  • MSS 10752-10799: Mildred Butler (1858-1941)
  • MS 10548: Dorothy Kay (1886-1964), including material relating to Beatrice Campbell (1881-1970)
  • MS 3199 et al: Edith Anna Oenone Somerville (1858-1949)
  • MSS 4499-4531: Estella Solomons (1882-1968)
  • MS 4592-4618: George William Russell (Æ) (1867-1935)
  • MSS 5970-6167: the archives of the Harry Clarke studio

Architects’ papers include

  • MSS 3868-3900: Harold Leask (1882-1964)
  • MS 10049: Percy le Clerc (1914-2002)

Archival material relating to historic buildings can be found within the estate collections of landed families:

  • MSS 3974-84: the Connolly papers
  • MS 11183: the papers of the Earls of Courtown
  • MSS 4181-84: Sir Philip Crampton
  • Trinity College Dublin’s own buildings are some of the most architecturally important buildings in Ireland, and the College Archives contain building records
