[Jan. 22nd 1916] enclose the Persian Gulf; the Mesopotamian campaign, at first so brilliant appears to be degenerating into trench warfare and ineffectual attempts to relieve the beleagured Kut; medical arrangements, supplies, modes of communication meet with adverse criticism and the prospect of burning suns, clouds if irritating flies, whirling storms of sand make one, – it would be inhuman if it did not,- regret that ones part in the greatest of wars did not lie in a more seasonable land. But we do not worry about that; we are too pleased to be off. We must be away in the morning.
