[May 1916]

It took a long time to convince the Turk that if one’s name was “Jones” that your fathers name could also be “Jones”. We sent our spare kit to the U.S.A. Embassy. We were then marched to the railway station where we entrained at 2.30 p.m. <on May 12th>, and we arrived at Samarra at 9.30 p.m., thus covering in 6 hours the 90 miles, which is all that is at present completed of this single line of railway – “Germanys Dream.”
