[5th August 1916] lightened the steamer. Steamed away from Hakika at about 9 a.m. We proceeded rapidly up the stream, now beautified by the green fertile plains extending from either bank into the far horizon and relieved by stately palm-groves, scattered villages, herds of buffaloes, flocks of sheep and droves of donkeys.
We passed the ruins of Abdul Hussain village with the fragments of the demolished towers still standing but with no sign of any attempt to build new habitations or repopulate the site. Reached Nasiriyah shortly after 1 p.m. and found all well in camp.
I hear by mail that Frank has gone to France. Being a bomb-sergeant, I fear his chances of getting through untouched are not of the rosiest.
