We have never wasted a round

7th November [1916] Tuesday

Quiet night on our front. Considerable rifle and machine gun fire left and right. Not a shot fired by the Kings. It is the boast of the 14 Kings both in France and here that we have never wasted a round or got the wind up – regiments right and left fire off at shapes and shadows and destroy their own self control. We wait till the shapes develop whites of eyes! Nothing is more useless, more wasteful and more destructive of moral and control than indiscriminate firing in the dark.

Was to have gone out with CSM Kenyon today but held up by artillery fire and forbidden to go by HQ. Went out shooting with Sykes in the afternoon. Got one hare and one partridge i.e. Sykes did. We only had one gun.
