Up 3.45am and set off by moonlight

14 August [1916]

Up 3.45am and set off by moonlight for the Piton des Zouaves reaching there by 5. Settled ourselves and found no British telephone existed and no way of communicating our finds. Glorious view over part of the town and nearly the whole Lake of Doiran and all the hills and enemy positions. Heavy shelling all day of Bulgar positions. Jerries reply 5 pm to 8 on this hill, struck on the clothes with a small piece but no harm done. French and Bulgar patrols met outside and had a scrap. 99D How. Battery registered from this hill in DOLDZELI.
Malory in JANES at Field Force Canteen. Back camp 9pm – 17 hours on end. Turned in after good dinner.
