The outlook on all sides has changed. Signs of human occupation appear in all directions. Arab encampments, both of black tents and matted huts lie scattered about. Fields of wheat, now being reaped, thrive along the banks of artificial water channels, brick kilns give an aspect of industry and the trees on the far river bank with the buildings of Nasiriyah appearing in the distance, recall the fertile gardens and the civilization of Basra. Crossing over a bridge of boats we entered Nasiriyah. Passing through the town near an old fort we camped in the open plain about a mile or so from the northern bank of the river. I chased ice, soda water and whisky for the mess with some success. The pleasure of an iced drink after a long hot march is not easily for-
