Nothing but an occasional mound of sand breaks the flat monotonous landscape of dreary wilderness and placid river. Scarce a tree and not a single human habitation, have we seen for the past six days; not even a few nomad Arab tents. I could never have believed that the banks of this great river, instilled with the hottest traditions of mankind, should be now lost in such neglect, in such loneliness of utter destruction

I have not yet mentioned the composition of our column. We are the 42nd Infantry brigade constituted as follows:
