One little peculiarity in locust flight was interesting when seen a vast swarm of insects. This was that the direction of the flight did not agree with the long individual axis of the insect. The locust did not move in the direction if faced. It headed in one direction and moved in a direction almost at right angles. It was a strange sight to witness innumerable insects all facing to the West, yet moving Northward in a sidelong manner. It was like a fleet of little ships, all falling away to leeward. After wheeling and moving far off on the Western horizon the swarm disappeared; the last locust had passed over our camp by 6.45p.m. *
