Locusts.

On the evening of the 21st March a large swarm of locusts passed over the desert. I had never seen the Eastern Locust (Species [word omitted] ) in India and always longed to witness its remarkable migratory flight. At 5.50pm the swarm first appeared. The densest part of the thing did not pass over our camp, but even at the outskirts of the flight the air was crowded with the insects. They came from S.S.E. and were heading in a direction N.N.W. Away to the East the swarm was at its thickest; there, in the far distance, it was possible with binoculars to discern the different individuals in the dense throng, but to the naked eye, the mass appeared like a low dark cloud stretching across the horizon, or like a haze of black smoke hanging over
