One of the most common, and certainly the most obstrusive animal in Basra, is the Edible Frog (Resculenta). This is the same species that extends through Europe. It frequents the network of irrigation channels and soon attracts attention by the beauty and variability of its colouration. It would be difficult to describe the many hues and tints that meet the eye as we pass from specimen to specimen. Some of these frogs are a dull mottled brown and lie unseen on the muddy banks; others are a little more distinct and
