The silt is of an extremely fine tenacious nature with subsidiary layers of a more friable sand. Fresh water (?) shells lie studded through *2 the deposit; often in a state of extreme decomposition. A large percentage of lime is present, which in places renders the alluvium hard and compact resulting in the formation of low hills that, from their more powerful resistance to the weather stand, as prominent landmarks, above the surrounding plain.*3
