The rule of the road is as in England – left in Salonika

21st September 1916

Up all day.
Construed what the Doctor said as meaning that I was at liberty to go out and went into Valetta in a gharry for the afternoon.
Wonderful little horses they have here in their light carriages. The rule of the road is as in England – left in Salonika and everywhere else except here the right of the road is the way. However the rule does not seem to be followed, so it does not matter. The drivers are irritable Jehus and their furious driving has at any rate the effect of making the children keep the pavements and be very careful how they go to the road. Valetta a charming place well off for shops, junior army and navy stores, numerous tobacconists and shops of all sorts. Blew a good deal of money – saved by many hard weeks’ sacrifice – on shirts, tobacco, cigarette cases, stamps for Aunt Lucy’s fund etc.
