[14th September 1916] iyah an hour earlier and, according to the scheme, ought to be in action by the time we came in contact with the enemy. I will not pursue their destinies, but confine my narrative to my own personal experiences and observations.
The plan of campaign may be understood from the accompanying map. The objective was the hostile village of As Sahilan to the North East of Nasiriyah; the red arrow represents the line of advance of the 42nd Brigade; the blue arrow that of the 12th Brigade; the point from where they diverge is the “rendez-vous” at their exit from Nasiriyah. The 12th Brigade were to march an hour in advance of us; were to move N.E. by E.; attack the village from the South; drive back the Arabs; enter the village, burn the houses and blow up the towers.
