be observed from the river in various ways. It is not only noticeable in the dense grows of palms that fringe the river but can, I think, be detected in individual trees. On first glancing over the densely wooded shore, some trees are seen to tower above their neighbours, and often expand their leafy heads high above their more stunted companions. Such trees sometimes exceed the others by one third of their height. On more careful inspection it would appear that the more lofty trees are growing along the very brink of the river and the edges of the water channels from where they obtain a more liberal supply of moisture than those standing short distance inland.
