The men were put 70 in cattle trucks built for 45 men

13th December [1915] Monday

[continued] when we heard of an accident down the line and stayed in the railway station 1600 in one train well within reach of enemy guns till 10 am. The men were put 70 in cattle trucks built for 45 men and 40 officers and men in one built for 34. Nobody had any [?] so we all exercised ourselves wondering what it meant. General opinion that we had arranged with the Greeks to clear out by the 15th instant and that the French were taking over the whole show. Reached Salonika in the afternoon when the train ran through camp and through the military station towards the Docks. All our hopes now high, but only to be dashed to the ground when we had to return to camp 6 weary miles along the blocked roads getting back on the old camp after a great week of work, worry and abstention from food – an experience I would not have missed for anything C Coy joke: Are you downhearted? No but bloody well broken hearted!
