The men and ourselves had to sleep in the open

14 November 1915

Continued good weather. Church parade 9.30. Football (Association) match officers A, B, and Hdqrs v. C and D companies. Very amusing for nearly all of us are Rugby men and know no ‘soccer’ and the game frequently developed into the other game. C and D won by 1 nil scored during extension by myself. Slacked during the rest of the day. Anderson and Smellie in Salonika. The camp is rapidly assuming a civilized appearance. The men and ourselves when we came had to sleep in the open without covering. Then a few tents were issued and the men made bullrush bivouac. A few tents per battalion issued each day in true Army fashion. First fresh meat and bread that we have had in Greece issued today. Men very perky. Wilfrid second star in the Times of the 29th Oct received with five other days papers all together! One realizes out here how footling the papers are. War Correspondents and military agents who evidently never saw even peace manoeuvres. No letters for me! No rumour!
