he is here subdued, not by the wonders that his senses show him, but rather by the perception of the narrow confines of these senses, of their complete inability to comprehend the infinity of the scene. It is the limitless immensity, the silent solitude, the merciless display of light that overwhelm him; these are the powerful impressions which he struggles to grasp but before which his mind his humbled. The summits of the mountains and the bosom of the ocean are recalled to thought, for it is only in the great wastes of land or water that the eye can gaze upon the imposing spectacle of a boundless horizon.
