The guns are expected to retire

22nd August [1916] Tuesday

Up 4.30, moved off my hill 5 am. Picked up rations at the Cookhouse and came over by platoons to A Coy Ravine – pleasant place that has never been shelled. ‘A’ Coy seemed to catch it pretty heavily just after we left. Pitched my bivouac in a pleasant spot where I am likely to make a large circle of acquaintance among the mosquitos.
Smellie up to us. He and Anderson told us of the interesting information given out at O. Room this morning that on account of the Allied set back at Jerres, General Sarrail has ordered suspension of activity here. The guns are expected to retire after which I suppose we will go back to Dandli and hold that pleasant line again. The truth of the matter is that the Bulgars have successfully turned our right flank because the Italians did not turn up in time. Italians are now coming on our right – next to the Regiment that is.
