The egotism of the man is perfectly surprising.

10th January 1916

Went up 6.35 to the Matterhorn and stayed up to 5.30. Told by Smith in the middle of the day that I would be relieved tonight. Nothing happened all day. Dempster in to dinner, during which Smellie in an argument as to how to blow up a bridge told us that he knew more about blowing up bridges than any R.E. The egotism of the man is perfectly surprising. He is detailed for a course of Field Engineering during which I trust Major Charles will knock some of the bounce out of him.
Wrote Frank Moran.
Handed over Matterhorn to Rutherford.
