The C.O. wanted to see me with reference to a pass to Salonika

19th January 1916

Breakfast and parade as usual for roadmaking up at Pirnar Road. Several rumours have been floating around the last few days that I have not jotted down.
They are to the effect that we are abandoning this place and being withdrawn. One rumour is that the Times announced that the first two Divisions engaged in Salonika – the 10th and ourselves – will be in England shortly. The 19th Kilo Dump (ours) is being now done away with, the French are putting guns in our present sector of the line – the bivouacs have been withdrawn, the surplus kits of the Draft men are being sent away now as ?in the event of a move no transport will be available to take them? as others say, a platoon and officers of the Border Rgt who have been attached 65th Bds Engineers were suddenly recalled to their regiment yesterday, and lastly we have had a sort of review by Gordon a sure sign of a move! In addition the R.E. quote Gordon himself as saying that we are leaving the country.
Received a chit from Smith that the C.O. wanted to see me with reference to a pass to Salonika issued by me to a Greek.
Wonder what is going to happen.
Wrote Wilfie a letter of high hope of meeting him at home in March. Indeed made a bet of 2 to 1 in 100 Goldflake that I would be home in March.
