mitting an acid fluid with considerable force must be for this insect, an excellent mode of defence against its enemies. The beetle is very conspicuous with prominent white markings contrasting vividly with the dense black of its wing-covers; so I suspect that its distinctive appearance would be considered by many naturalists as a warming to its pursuers not to approach so well armed a prey.
