The ship passed through a numer of patches of discoloured water. The areas were of a red rust colour; some very dense and only a few yards in diameter, others in the form of long bands miles in length and five or six yards in width. The long bands were often parallel and appeared to me to be due to the disintegration of the smaller but denser patches as the bands were composed of numerous small fragments, more delicate and of a lighted colour which looked like the expansion and disintegration of a darker and more substantial area. This discolouration is, I suppose, due to the small conferral which has given the Red Sea its distinctive name. The sailors consider all coloured water at sea as due to fish
