[5 March 1917] You wanted me to give a description of the battery personnel. Well of the Major enough said. Next there are the four subalterns besides myself. Rowsell about 27 who was on the Stock Exchange & Coast defence! Hanhart about 38 who was a barrister and went through a cadet school. Both such good chaps no one could help liking them. Certainly we are an extraordinarily lucky battery that way as we all without exception get on excellently together. Then there is Robton the only one younger than myself who is about 20 – came from Cambridge – has long black hair parted in the middle & is a very cheerful individual – and Powell 29 who was a railway engineer in S. Africa – apt to be slightly irritable at times especially before breakfast – but a very good soul to get on with.
