6th August [1916] Sunday
Mallory back 4 am. Nothing to report. Had to stand to longer than usual as the sky was cloudy.
Major Nickols round my place at men’s dinner time. Haynes brought back at 1.15pm his patrol with one Bulgar prisoner, taken asleep on sentry duty in the Bulgar trenches. That is the military cross for Haynes – the first prisoner the Brigade has taken.
Bulgars did some shelling on our right.
Jennison back from hospital yesterday.
Rained like the devil from 8 to midnight. The unfortunate men with no shelter and only their greatcoats. The trench flooded.
