Quiet night, but first night in trenches

4th November [1916] Saturday

Quiet morning. Relieved 9 East Lancs on Centre Sector 9 pm, orders having been changed and ‘D’ put in with ‘B’. On arrival in the trenches Stapleton promptly went to bed! Sykes, Tyler and myself had all the work of settling down.
Quiet night, but first night in trenches always a rather touchy time. We are very weak in numbers to hold the line.
