[Jan 23rd 1916]paration for our march to Peshawar, the first move in our long journey. All baggage, tentage and equipment was loaded by 10.30am and we were ready for the road at 11am. The Sussex Regiment , one of the few regular battalions of te original expeditionary force, came to see us off, and their pipes and drums accompanied us to the first of the boat bridges across the Kabul River. Then, leaving us, out own band took up the strain and we swung along gaily to the well worn war-tune of “Tipperary”. This was a short march of but twelve miles; a little warm and very dusty.
