[10th September 1916] our authority by placing him in power, and were to attend on the occasion of his enthronement to allow his neighbours to understand that he had behind him the armed support of the British. But we must recognise that he would hold the village only against Arabs; that, on the appearance of hostile regulars, he would instantly flee.
To effect this crowning of the Sheik of El Khidr, our gunboats and escort vessels steamed up the river. The Sheik and his party, with their long string of camels, moved along the desert. On reaching the village it was found to be occupied in strength. Its position was a strong one and our force was insufficient to capture it without suffering undesirable loss. So the expedition had to return without achieving its object. The Sheik had
