Not by any way as satisfactory a performance on the part of sundry officers

2nd October [1916] Monday

Went into Valetta in the afternoon and called at the Anglo Egyptian Bank to get my money: money unfortunately not there. Had tea and took a gondola on the Grand Harbour and rowed in and out of everything. Very interesting indeed – vast variety of Allied warships in – variety rather than number.
Came back to hospital to find Charles Byson here with malaria, and from him got a more detailed account of the affair of the 13th-14th Sept. Not by any way as satisfactory a performance on the part of sundry officers as I would have expected. Perhaps I may make myself plain on some future day.
Views of Malta from the Grand Harbour very fine indeed – the rocks and yellow buildings rising sheer from the water’s edge. Clearly the place to spend time in Malta.
Medical visit not yet materialized. As far as I can see the normal thing is to stay here for life or go to England. They don’t seem to know how to set about sending you back to Salonika.
