Men’s rations fail today for the second time in a week

21st December 1915 Tuesday

Last night cleared somewhat and mist had gone by 9 o’clock. Rather rotten with severe diarrhea. Thunder storm with very heavy rain during the night. Was awake most of the night and kept so by the rain coming through the roof of the cowshed. Paraded at 9 o’c for the trenches on a somewhat more respectable morning and stayed out with the men all day. Weather much better in the early afternoon and night exceedingly fine with good full moon. Men’s rations fail today for the second time in a week and men reduced to quarter rations – biscuits and tea – beef, tea sugar, milk and cheese all failing. Fresh meat or even things like butter and vegetables things of the past: though the French supply themselves from the country they pass through and live on sheep, goats etc while we are not allowed to do anything except to buy – and the Greeks put such prices on their commodities that that fairly dishes it.
Turned in early feeling rather better.
