I feel inclined to make a few remarks regarding the animals in our transport column. Plodding along in the scorching sun without a sign of life in the sky or in the land, the mind wandered unconsciously towards our beasts of burden. Many of our mules showed zebra markings, unmistakeable signs of their ancestry. One dun animal had no less than nine zebra stripes on each fore-leg and eight on each hing-leg. But a marking much more general than the stripes was a black spot at the base and a black poin to the tip of the ear. This marking occurred in almost all our dun animals.
