Many bonfires lighted by the men and every prospect

24th December [1915]

Hand over 9 am one prisoner to Jones and go back to camp. Relieved from duty for 24 hours some of which I spent on the Matterhorn.
Many bonfires lighted by the men and every prospect of a cheery evening. Carols sung by picked men outside C.O.s billet after which all adjourned to a great fire in the centre of the village and with great expectations I went down also but alas a padre turned up and the camp concert went from carols to a service, and the attendance from half the Regiment to about 30 and the poor men went to bed, songless and crushed.
