It was evident on the 21st that a storm was brewing; there was an uncanny stillness in the atmosphere a feeling of enervation and loss of vitality, and a brown cloud, as though it was a sky loaded with dust, darkened the remote horizon. The absolute calm was distressing; not the faintest suggestion of a breeze was felt, and the air became hourly more stuffy and oppressive. I write my journal during this calm squatting before a lantern on the warm sands.
