In such a devilish sweat that I sought out the MO

4th September [1916] Monday

Lecture 7 am. Hot and cold by turns and hardly able to keep awake. Had to leave breakfast practically untouched. Another lecture on the Stokes guns to noon. In such a devilish sweat then that I sought out the MO and reported sick. Temperature God knows what, but after bathing me in cold water for half an hour they got it down to 106.60. After two hours’ bathing they reduced it to 103 deg and then packed me off to 25 Casualty Clearing Station where I spent the night among sheets and on a bed for the first time for many a day.
