[14th September 1916] enjoyed the same degree of safety, we could afford to smile at each other. I remained for, I suppose, an hour at thorny mound while we and the enemy exchanged a desultory fire. My battalion had gradually moved off more to the left as the Arabs were slowly extending in the same direction with the apparent object of creeping round our left flank. I had, therefore, to shift my position in accordance with the fundamental principle of maintaining close touch with my regiment.
